Diminishing facial volume in areas of the face.

An important factor in maintaining overall skin health and youthfulness is hyaluronic acid—a substance the body naturally produces and that helps provide nutrients that enable the skin to retain softness, moisture, and volume. As the skin ages, it produces decreasing quantities of hyaluronic acid, making the skin appear older and diminishing facial volume. One treatment was designed specifically to address this volume loss by delivering hyaluronic acid via an injectable treatment: JUVEDERM®. Tucson and Oro Valley patients can benefit from this collection of JUVEDERM® injectable fillers, which include a handful of products designed to address specific areas of the face, from providing volume and shape to the cheeks to filling in lines and wrinkles that form around the mouth (commonly called parenthesis lines).

While volume loss might sound like a mild aspect of aging, a small amount of added volume can accomplish a lot for patients interested in reclaiming some lost youthfulness.

Am I a Good Candidate for JUVEDERM® in Tucson?

Women and men over the age of 18 who are experiencing facial volume loss, including the formation of parentheses lines around the mouth, are potentially good candidates for JUVEDERM®. Patients who are allergic to lidocaine, prone to scarring, pregnant or breastfeeding, or utilizing medications that prolong bleeding might not be good candidates for JUVEDERM®.

The best way to determine which treatment method will meet your needs is to schedule a consultation with a licensed cosmetic injector at Ironwood Dermatology. This injector will evaluate your skin and help develop a treatment plan to meet your goals. In addition to the aesthetic benefits of a consultation with a cosmetic injector, proper skin care can help boost overall health and the right skin care routine can even diminish the frequency of aesthetic skin treatments.

Juvederm® is an FDA-approved dermal filler made of a hyaluronic acid gel that is chemically similar to the liquid form found in our bodies. This dermal filler quite literally "fills" the areas it is injected into, adding volume and smoothing the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and folds. A Juvederm® treatment session can take less than 15 minutes, depending on the number of areas you wish to treat. Once the associated swelling and bruising subside, the treated areas will look smoother and more youthful.

What Can I Expect During a JUVEDERM® Treatment in Tucson, AZ?

A typical JUVEDERM® appointment lasts less than an hour, most of which is spent obtaining the patient's medical history, evaluating the skin for any rashes or damage, and walking the patient through the process.

The actual injection process takes about 10 minutes, beginning with a thorough cleaning of the treatment area. There are several different methods for addressing skin sensitivity, including topical anesthetics. Patients can discuss these options, as well as any preferences, with the injection administrator. Certain JUVEDERM® products contain an anesthetic called lidocaine to help diminish sensitivity.

The number of JUVEDERM® injections administered during a single session depends on the number of areas being treated and the degree of volume loss in those areas. Typically, a session involves two or more injections, after which the patient can resume his or her normal activities.

Some patients experience swelling, bruising, discoloration, or itching at the injection site for several days or weeks following treatment. However, such effects are usually mild and diminish with time. Patients can minimize symptoms by avoiding strenuous activity and sun exposure for one day following treatment. Swelling can often be minimized with an ice pack.

While JUVEDERM® patients are satisfied with their results after their first treatment, patients may benefit from additional rounds of JUVEDERM® injections after the first appointment. Results usually last one to two years, depending on the specific injectable used, after which patients can schedule additional sessions to maintain their results.

It is important to select an injector who has experience with JUVEDERM®, since someone familiar with the injectable will be more likely to create results that harmonize with the rest of the face and appear natural—not stand out.

Hyaluronic Acid and Collagen

Though JUVEDERM® is hyaluronic acid based, it serves to do more than replace lost hyaluronic acid. Another component of healthy skin is collagen, which—like hyaluronic acid—tends to diminish over time as it breaks down due to environmental factors and takes longer and longer to be replaced.

While hyaluronic acid provides moisture, collagen typically provides volume. The two molecules actually go hand in hand, as collagen provides structure and framework that supports hyaluronic acid in the skin.

Dermal fillers used to be collagen based, derived from animals—a problem for people with certain allergies. With its specially made formula, JUVEDERM® offers numerous advantages over former fillers, including its ability to be used in a wider percentage of the population.

JUVEDERM® Cost in Tucson, AZ

As with any aesthetic procedure, it's difficult to provide exact costs of JUVEDERM® without knowing specific information about the individual patient. Factors such as the number and severity of areas being treated play a major role in determining the full cost. However, following a consultation during which we examine the patient's skin and develop a treatment plan, we do provide our patients with a full rundown of everything they can expect during treatment, including the estimated cost.

Other Fillers in the JUVEDERM® Family

Made by the same company as JUVEDERM®, Voluma® specifically restores volume to the cheek area, while Volbella® addresses fine lines around the mouth. Find out how these dermal fillers can best work together on your face.

All are made with the same proprietary manufacturing process, specifically designed to produce a gel that is both smooth and durable. The formula includes varying weights of hyaluronic acid molecules, all cross-linked to create the gel that has made JUVEDERM® one of the most popular and effective cosmetic treatments in the United States.

Options Beyond JUVEDERM®

While fillers are versatile and effective, they are not the only treatment options available at Ironwood Dermatology for patients looking to restore a more youthful look to their face.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a popular choice for treating dynamic wrinkles, which is the term for lines that form as muscles pull the skin repeatedly into the same position over and over again. Since these wrinkles are not a volume-loss-related problem, adding volume is not the solution for addressing them. BOTOX® relaxes the muscles. If the skin does not move, the wrinkles are not as visible. Note that BOTOX® and JUVEDERM® are both made by the same company: Allergan.

For sun spots or issues of tone, patients may consider chemical peels, microneedling, laser skin resurfacing, and more.

The Ironwood Dermatology Team seeks to match each patient with the ideal treatment or treatments, which may include Juvederm®, another filler, or some combination of options. The best way to get started is to arrange a consultation.
